Hi. I’m Dr. Weihui Li. I am a licensed acupuncturist, herbalist, and hold a PhD in biomedical engineering. As the president of Wellness Allied, I am committed to the promotion of integrative medicine, which I believe will allow people to live longer and healthier lives.

Currently, we are living under a cloud of uncertainty which is the novel coronavirus, COVID-19. Some of this uncertainty stems from a lack of complete information. In addition, the pervasive rhetoric that is circulating about the origin of the virus is politicizing healthcare.

There exists a current undertone of Anti-Chinese sentiment or Sinophobia. A rising wave  of sentiment against China and its leadership is palpable in this country. The concern is that like COVID-19, sentiment will spread to Chinese Americans and Chinese culture. In a not too distant history, we can remember that following the attack on Pearl Harbor by Japan, about 120,000 Japanese Americans living on the West Coast were put into concentration camps under Executive Order 9066 by then U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt. History cannot be repeated.

Our emotions are what drives us. When we use the word 'pandemic,' people often react negatively and with great anxety. To combat the fear and insecurity, we must embrace measures that have a proven record of success and effectiveness. Negative rhetoric and Anti-Chinese sentiment may not only ignite violence against Asian people, it may also preclude people from trying Traditional Chinese Medicine which has been proven to be effective in the prevention and treatment of COVID-19.  Look, The City of Wuhan and its surrounding provinces have no new cases to report.

By rising above the ill-informed notions, opinions, and even public sentiments negatively impacting the Chinese community, with xenophobic rants and in some cases, violence, we can be open to a true humanitarian solution. A solution that combines the ancient wisdom of eastern medicine with the science of western medicine, so we can all enjoy the prosperity of good health.  The conversation needs to begin, and bridges need to be built. Because Health has no borders.
